Questions
Do I need a NAS, or is cloud backup enough?
Cloud backup is good off-site insurance. A NAS gives fast local access and a copy you control. The safest setups use both.
Is RAID the same as a backup?
No. RAID keeps a server running when a drive dies. It doesn’t protect against deletion, ransomware or fire. Backups need separate copies, including one off-site.
Can you set up a file server for my office?
Yes: shared folders, permissions per person, and backups from day one.
Can I run my own apps instead of paying for subscriptions?
Often, yes. Many popular services have self-hosted equivalents that run on a small server you own. Flowing Pixels runs its own business this way.
Do you maintain servers after setup?
Yes. Monitoring, updates and drive replacements can be ongoing.
What happens to a server in a power outage?
A battery backup (UPS) keeps it running through short outages and shuts it down cleanly in long ones. Tahoe winters make that worth having.
