How it works

  1. Tell me what’s happening

Call or email with the symptoms, any error messages, and anything that changed. The verbal diagnosis is free.

  2. Diagnose

Software problems often get fixed in a remote session. Hardware needs hands on: on-site, or drop the machine off.

  3. Repair

If it needs parts, I call with what’s needed before ordering. If it isn’t worth repairing, you’ll hear that too.

Questions

How long does a repair take?

It depends on the fault and the parts. Software fixes often happen in one session. Repairs that need parts wait on shipping. You’ll get an estimate once the problem is known.

Do I bring it in, or can you come to me?

Either. House calls, drop-off and pick-up all work around the South Shore, and software problems can often be fixed remotely.

Can you get files off a failed hard drive?

Often, yes. Drives that are failing or won’t boot can usually be read. Drives with physical damage, like clicking or not spinning, may need a specialist cleanroom lab, and I’ll tell you if yours does.

Is it worth repairing, or should I replace it?

It depends on the age, the fault and the cost of parts. After the diagnosis, you get a straight answer either way.

Can you remove viruses and malware?

Yes: viruses, malware, pop-ups and the aftermath of fake tech-support scams, plus help securing your accounts afterwards.

Do you repair Macs?

Yes, for batteries, screens, check-ups and software problems. I don’t do logic board repair, microsoldering, or work that needs chip reprogramming.

Do you repair laptops as well as desktops?

Yes, both, Windows and Mac.

What does a repair cost?

Talking it through is free. A hands-on hardware diagnostic is $49 to $99, depending on how much disassembly it takes, and it counts toward the repair if you go ahead. Repairs are $100 an hour plus parts, and I call before ordering parts or before a job grows.
